Introduction to the motorcycle trip from Namibia to South Africa
The trails between the two southernmost countries of Africa are probably the most beautiful that can be ridden with an enduro! This tour is not lacking in contrasts. We start on the high plateau of Windhoek, ride down to the deserts of the Namib and Kalahari, the unique dune sea of Sossusvlei, into the diamond area, to the uninhabited Atlantic coast, through the breathtaking Fish River Canyon, we marvel at the Orange River where grapes abound, and continue through the sea of flowers of Namaqualand, through the alpine-like Cedar Mountains up to the fruit and wine-growing regions of the Cape Region. Finally, we reach one of the most beautiful cities in the world - Cape Town with its Table Mountain. Cape Town has a lot to offer, so one should definitely add a connecting holiday. The motorcycle trip is suitable for everyone, we mostly ride on good gravel roads and in places also on asphalt. The tour can be booked as a hotel/camping tour or as a hotel tour.
Daily program: Windhoek - Cape Town with the travel-enduro
Day 1: Arrival in Windhoek
You will be picked up at Hoseo Kutako International Airport in Windhoek and first have a 45-kilometer transfer to Windhoek. Here we stroll through the colorful hustle and bustle and familiarize ourselves with the African mentality, take care of formalities, make purchases such as currency exchange, phone cards, sun and mosquito repellent, buy biltong (dried meat) or something similar for the road, because the next day we head into the Namib Desert. Accommodation: Lodge / Camping
Day 2: Windhoek - Sesriem (320km)
We are heading southwest - towards the Namib Desert. At the Spreetshoogte Pass, we have a gigantic view down to the Namib. 100 million years ago, South America and Africa separated at this escarpment. Refueling at the desert gas station Solitaire. Our final destination today is Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei. Accommodation: Guesthouse / Camping
Day 3: Sossusvlei - Beta (170km)
We have to get up early today to experience the sunrise atmosphere in the dune area. Sossusvlei, one of the three most famous attractions in Namibia (alongside Etosha and Fish River Canyon), is a clay pan surrounded by red dunes, which are among the highest in the world at 300 meters. During a small dune hike, you can "breathe" in the vastness and silence of the orange dune sea. Unfortunately, motorcycles are not permitted in the national park and we have to switch to the support vehicle. On the way back, we visit the narrow gorge of the Sesriem Canyon. We then continue along the huge Namib Naukluft Park. On the left, the escarpment and on the right, the red-oxidized dunes of the Namib - we marvel at endless plains crossed by Oryx antelopes. Accommodation: Guesthouse
Day 4: Lüderitz (330 km)
The desert landscape down to the Atlantic at Lüderitz is incomparable. Endless expanses. We have lunch in the small town of Aus. A fresh breeze will blow towards us from the Atlantic. On the way, we have the opportunity to visit the old train stations from the colonial era. Accommodation: Lodge / Camping
Day 5: Out (200 km)
In the morning we visit Kolmannskuppe - once the richest city in Africa during the diamond era, today a ghost town where the dunes increasingly gain the upper hand. Afterwards, we take a winding drive along the sea to the Diaz Cross, where the Portuguese sailor and explorer Bartholomeu Diaz erected a historic cross in 1488. Accommodation: chalet or luxury tent / camping
Day 6: Fish River Canyon (260 km)
We drive via Seeheim towards Fish River Canyon, past the Naute Dam and the gigantic date plantations. In the late afternoon, we reach the impressive Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. Here we linger for a while to enjoy the vastness and tranquility. Overnight stay at the Canyon Road House. Accommodation: Bungalow
Day 7: Oranjemund (300 km)
Continuing along a varied track that runs parallel to the Fish River. The route takes us through a gorge down to Ai-Ais. A bath in the warm spring water invigorates the limbs. After the desert landscape, we suddenly encounter the vast, green table grape growing area by the Orange River. We drive the 180 km along the winding route beside the Orange border river to Oranjemund. The town was owned by the diamond company until 2017 and was closed to tourism. Accommodation: Guesthouse / Camping
Day 8: Hondeklipbaai (290 km)
Today the border crossing to South Africa is on the agenda. We follow the lonely route along the Atlantic coast to Port Nolloth and through the deserted diamond town Kleinzee, where diamond mining is hardly active anymore. On the short asphalt road built by the diamond company, we reach Hondeklipbaai. Those who love peace and the sea will fall in love with this small, sleepy place. Accommodation: Guesthouse / Camping
Day 9: Klawer (260 km)
Today we are temporarily leaving the coast and continuing south on small gravel roads. The area is sparsely populated. Near Lutzville at the Olifants River, the famous South African wine-growing region begins. We follow the course of the river with its green vineyards to Klawer. In the evening, we can taste the wines from the region. Overnight: Guesthouse / Camping
Day 10: Cederberge (140 km)
Today a fascinating route awaits us, winding along the river. This route is very popular among South African motorcyclists. Near Clanwilliam, we turn into the Cederberg, onto a narrow, winding track. Many compare this area to the Dolomites in Europe. We will stop at the viewpoints to enjoy the view of the impressive, rugged mountains. Overnight: Guesthouse / Camping
Day 11: Stellenbosch (230 km)
We leave the magnificent Ceder Mountains on a winding route. Today features a true curve highlight. We drive over several passes and through the orchards of Ceres. The drive becomes narrow in the gorge of Bainskloof Pass, where we can expect great views over Wellington. Our destination is Stellenbosch, known for its world-famous wine region. The town impresses with its oak-lined avenues and well-preserved Dutch architecture. Civilization has found us again. Overnight: Guesthouse / Camping
Day 12: Cape Town (160 km)
A trip to Cape Town is not complete until you visit the infamous Cape of Storms - the Cape of Good Hope. We make a detour to the penguin beach "Boulders Beach" and optionally to Cape Point. Afterwards, we drive back to Cape Town along the impressive coastal road at Chapman's Peak. We have reached one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Overnight: Guesthouse / Camping
Day 13: Cape Town
Today either the connecting vacation or the transfer to the airport is on the agenda. Due to the different departure times, we cannot take over the transfer, but we would be happy to organize it. A connecting vacation in Cape Town and the wine region at the Cape can be gladly organized by OVERCROSS!
